Genova is the chief town in Liguria. Overlooking the Ligurian Sea, its history is connected to seafaring and trade. Its harbor is one of the most important in Italy together with that of Trieste, and one of the largest in the Mediterranean. The city is home to shipyards and steel works from the nineteenth century, and its solid financial sector dates back to the Middle Ages. The city is also an important center of international education and scientific research.
Its architectural symbol is its lighthouse, known as the Lanterna.
