Matera is the largest town in Basilicata thanks to a significant economic, trade and cultural growth obtained as chief town during the Regno di Napoli. Widely recognized as Città dei Sassi, it is known for the Sassi district, which is one of the oldest inhabited areas in the world; it is a system made of dwellings carved out of the steep slopes of a deep valley with surprising and unusual features called the Gravina. The Sassi are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2014 Matera was designated European Capital of Culture for 2019.
