Birthplace of the Latin language, Roma was the capital of the Roman Empire, which extended its dominion over the entire Mediterranean and much of Europe. In the course of its millennial history, it has been the great heart of one of the most important ancient civilizations, influencing society, literature, art, architecture, philosophy, religion and customs of the following centuries.
Its historic center, bounded by the perimeter of the Aurelian walls, is an expression of the cultural heritage of the Western European world. In 1980, along with the extraterritorial properties of the Holy See in the city, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.
